If you love music, Powell River is the place for you! Since we are starting off a new year, I thought I would entice you with just some of the musical events that 2018 will bring to us here in our little piece of coastal paradise.
Let’s start with jazz. One of my favourite nights of the year is fast approaching; Friday January 19th to be exact. That is Brooks Jazz Dinner night with music provided by Brooks Secondary students and a fabulous gourmet meal provided and served by the students in the culinary program. VisitPowellRiver has gone the last 2 years and it does not disappoint. This is no ordinary high school talent show, I assure you. If you can still get tickets do so. $45. from the Brooks School Office.
There is quite a stir in town over a Jazz Festival scheduled for April 5th to 7th. With 10 performances set up over the three days, at a reasonable $20. per concert at cozy venues, the Townsite Jazz Festival is destined to become an annual favourite. Check out the townsite jazz website for concerts and tickets.
For classical music fans you can’t beat the PRISMA Festival. Mark your calendars for June 11th to 23rd, 2018. Students arrive from around the world for the 2-week boot camp to hone their performance skills under excellent musical mentors, and the audience benefits from the lessons. Complete with galas, outdoor celebrations and several concerts, this festival is a feast for the classics. Visit the PRISMA website for all the details.
Perhaps you should plan your vacation for June and July because this year Powell River also hosts Kathaumixw (pronounced Ca-Tie-Mew), the international choral festival from July 3rd to July 7th. Choirs from around the globe transpose the town into a 5-day musical ride with an opening ceremony, closing ceremony and days of non-stop songster competitions in between. Again, tickets are reasonable and you will find yourself singing a happy song! Check the Kathaumixw website for concerts and tickets.
And then there is the Texada Blues Fest the end of July and the annual folk/roots Sunshine Coast Music Festival on Labour Day Weekend in September and concerts from the Academy of Music and concerts at the Max Cameron and… well, you get the idea. Powell River is Music City!
Should you reside in the area, all these festivals welcome volunteers giving you an insider seat to the music. If you are planning a visit to Powell River in 2018 consider adding one of our musical festivals to your itinerary.
